Thank You MIss ChiChi Rodriguez

For our last session of the year, we were lucky enough to have model for us local celebrity MIss ChiChi Rodriquez. We were thrilled to be featuring one of our home-grown models for the monkeys to sketch. We were even more thrilled to announce to the crowd that ChiChi has been asked to participate in this year's Miss'd America Pageant.

For those of you who don't know, the Miss America Pageant originated in NJ. It was originally conceived as a way to keep the tourists in town after the official end of summer that comes with the arrival of labor day.

Miss'd America was a spoof of the historic pagaent and features Drag Queens from all over the US. It is a fun and fantastic night in AC and they help to raise money for multiple charities. We are honored to have had ChiChi model for us and we are super proud that she will be representing Millville at the pagaent!

And if she performs like she did for our session, we know she'll be a winner! Her poses were fun, her outfits funner and her facial expressions were stunning. She put a smile on everyone's face. To top it off, she brought Santa along with her to make sure we were all good little boys and girls this year:)

Thanks ChiChi - we wish you luck at the pageant. And thanks to our monkeys for another fun-filled year! We'll be off for January for the holidays, but we'll be back in February with new and exciting info, so stayed tuned!

I don't know how we do it, but each session, the models just keep getting better and better. One would think that it just isn't possible, but if you were at our last session with Lyra Kelli, you would realize that it is true.

Part of Philly's Own Peek-A-Boo Revue, Lyra was a stunning and amazing model. A beautiful person to draw and just as beautiful to deal with, this is the kind of model Dr. Sketchy's is known for! I haven't heard my monkeys complain this much when I called the end of the session as I did for Lyra's. The artists were enthralled with her poses. Each one was well thought out and interesting no matter where you sat.

Our models were so inspired, that when it came down to the Model's Choice of the Day, Lyra had a tough task ahead of her. There were soooo many great pieces, it was a good thing we had some awesome prizes, like a local favorite - Blueberry Wine - and some fantastic (and always sought after) books donated by Baby Tattoo Books.

Lyra's session is going to be hard to top, but here at Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School South Jersey, we're up for the challenge! Next month we are featuring a local model, Millville's very own Miss ChiChi Rodriquez. So, won't you come out and celebrate the naughty with us at our December session????

Jazz Festival

Over our summer hiatus, while we were doing anything but hiatusing, we were approached by a committee member from the Olde Kings Jazz Festival. They had attended a few Dr. Sketchy sessions in the past and wanted to know if we would be interested in being part of their 2010 festival. I'm always excited to bring my branch to festivals and other such art events, but need to keep that excitement in check until I get more information. I proceeded to look up everything I could about the event online, converse with people who had been involved or attended in past years and lastly, I made sure to visit the venue that was interested in hosting us.

Well, even if everything hadn't checked out, and even if the venue and it's owner weren't as fantastic as they were, I would have to have done the event for the simple fact that everyone involved was just so darn nice. It really makes a difference when people are enthused about what we are all about. Plus, they answered all my questions in a timely manner and ran a really professional setup in getting our branch there and in handling the behind the scenes paperwork, etc. The venue was already determined for me and a band was selected to perform at the same locale. After visiting the town and seeing the venue, I knew we had a good fit and knew exactly who I wanted to have a my models.

Candy Mayhem has posed for my branch a few times in the past. A gorgeous lady both inside and out, I knew her style, grace and poise would be a good match for a 1940's esque festival and a venue that pays tribute to beauties from the golden age of film. I also wanted Little Darling to be there as well. She is a great model, and has posed in the past for the Philadelphia branch. Due to scheduling conflicts there was never a time I could book her and was sorely disappointed by that. This time however, she, along with Candy, readily agreed to be there.

With 2 fantastic models booked, it was just a matter of generating a promo and spreading the word. I had the props for the stage dressing already under control. The majority of the decor in my house looks like the 1940's came and never left. So I knew I had that in the bag. To top it off though, I contacted a good friend of mine and past fellow colleague, Tony, owner of Audio Lab a local recording studio. He was so kind as to lend me 2 vintage mics and a mic stand to help complete my stage setup. Unbeknownst to me, the onwer of the venue asked the jazz trio that would be playing along with our session to bring one of their stand up bass's just so the models could pose with it. I love when people think like that! Paul, of Final Touch Salon, had never been to one of our sessions, but he was excited to host us and really got into the whole setup and concept of Dr. Sketchy's.

The promo was a hit, but with 2 beautiful ladies like Candy and Little Darling, how could it not be??? But, it was a hit and it started to generate a buzz. The week leading up to the festival was just windy, rainy and miserable. Not that that would effect my session all that much as we were inside, I was still worried that people wouldn't want to walk about in the cold misty rain. Well, no worries as the weather cleared up and we had a gorgeous day/night ahead of us! We rolled to the venue early to get setup and again, Paul the owner was all too willing to help. I think he would have renovated existing walls if I asked him too. But that was not necessary:)

The venue is just a beautiful place and there is a nice picture window that juts out into the public walking space outside. It is well-lit and served as a perfect staging area for my models. Not only were they raised up from the floor for everyone inside to see, the view from outside was intriguing. I knew putting them "on display" like that would draw a crowd and it did. To add even more interest, the band decided to play outside. People would stop to listen and inevitably come inside. How could you not????

At one point, we even stopped the crowd by having Little Darling go out and pose with the band. Everyone, including the monkeys ran outside, sketch pads in hand.

As the night grew, so did our audience. Some people stopped by out of curiosity, some came specifically because they heard we were going to be there and some wound up at our venue because word was getting around that we had the coolest show in town. No doubt. People couldn't believe our models could sit so still and were thrilled to be able to get sneak peeks at what the monkeys were drawing.

The night flew by and before we knew it, the end of the session rolled around. Sadly we had to call the last pose and pack it in for the night. We had an amazing time and would like to thank the following people:
Olde Kings' Jazz Festival
Gloucester County Cultural and Heritage Commission
All the good people, especially Paul, from The Final Touch Salon

and to all those who came out in support of our branch. Thanks so much and hopefully we'll see you next year!

Thanks to Miss Key!

It was cold and rainy outside, but Miss Key brightened up our day!!!!

Miss Key, of Philly's own Peek-A-Boo Revue graciously modeled for us for our October session and she was amazing! Her outfits were stunning and her poses were fun. We were delighted to be able to feature someone from such a well-know troupe and can't thank her enough for coming all the way down to our little town for the day.

We always try to make our models as comfy as possible. If we can, we bring additional props or anything else that will make their job easier. We know we wouldn't want to be up there and to hold a pose for even a few seconds is too much for our ADD riddled minds! So, one of the best parts of our venue is the fact that we share space with an antiques store. You never know what the models are going to walk out with for their next pose. It was much to our surprise to see one of our monkey's stuffed monkey make an appearance. It was whimsical, it was funny and it was something to behold. I think the monkey was bigger than the model and boy did he look happy sitting on her lap...but then again, so would I:)

We may be a small branch, but we pack a wallop when it comes to the caliber of our models. And for the month of October, Miss Key didn't disappoint...if anything, she just raised the bar higher. Good thing we have Lyra Kelli next month! So, if you want something fun to do and think NJ doesn't have much to offer, then you need to check us out!

We here at the South Jersey Branch would like to thank Satangela for being our model this past Saturday. This was the first time we got to work with her and she did not disappoint! Her poses were well thought out and sexy. She really knew how to work a pose and get the most out of the slightest of gestures. Her outfits were amazing - even though she decided to forgo some clothing in order to be comfy for her 20 minute pose. I don't think anyone was complaining though:)

Satangela is just one gorgeous lady and we can't wait to work with her again.

Our monkeys had a great time and we saw some new faces which is always nice. To top it off, one of our new attendees won the model's choice of the night, so congrats to Josh. We hope you enjoy your book donated by our sponsor Baby Tattoo books. We now can't wait for our October sessions!

Yes, you read that right! Sessions...as in plural! We will be holding our regular session on Sunday, October 3rd at The Artists Consortium in Millville and we will also be partaking in the Swedesboro Jazz Festival on October 16th. More info will follow, so stay tuned!

In May we told our Monkeys we would be taking a summer hiatus until September, and its been anything but!!!

We kicked off June by having our first ever gallery showing. Brenner's Brew in Bridgeton invited us to show for the whole month. The pieces submitted by the monkeys were outstanding and the reception during First Friday was amazing. The whole event was more than we had ever imagined.

The popularity of the Bridgeton show made its way back to Millville, where we took over 3 venues for a July showing. Third Friday for July was just this past weekend and what a blast. I don't know who is having more fun, me, the viewers or the monkeys!

We are also currently working on our very own branch tshirts (jump over to our facebook page to get your vote in!) and a fall schedule that should be spectacular! We can't wait to unveil more details, so stay tuned!!!
