High Five Fine Artists!

Today is brought to you by the letter "F" and we'll be finessing a façade with the fabulous faces and fine fannies of our Frank Frazetta figurines, while finagling fiery fantasy into your freaky Friday! I think I used up all my "F" words...oh wait...no I didn't.  This Session features the cutie with the booty, Miss Kita St Cyr and the feirce and fearless Tony Apollo posing in effigy to the Frazetta Phenomenon.

Merry Christmas, Art Martians!

Don't you love Christmas movies? Don't they just bring out the holiday spirit in you? They're such an essential part of the season. Why, with the secularization of America, you would hardly even know when it was Christmas if it weren't for the constant reminders for three months of every year. If there's one thing that we at Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School like more than old-fashioned Christmas movies, it's old-fashioned science fiction. Nothing puts us in the spirit of brotherhood and charity more than robots and time-traveling space monsters. It was only natural, then, that this Christmas, we staged a tribute to the science fiction Christmas classic Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. I know that you out there are no jaded, cynical Scrooges. You still have the childlike sense of wonderment required to make believe that this blog was written three months ago when it was still seasonally appropriate. So come along with me and photographer Kate Black as Lillet St. Sunday as the Martian is conquered by Santa Claus.

The day started out as usual - Santa preparing for his Christmas deliveries, Voldar preparing to invade the Earth, and Torr preparing for his big Turing test.

Santa made first contact with the Martian and offered her a box of chocolates, which is a traditional interplanetary greeting, expecially with aliens you want to bang.

Backstage, we see some of the Martian's beauty secrets, which, as you would imagine, are laser-based.

"What are these antennae doing on your head?" Santa joked. "Don't you get cable on Mars?" Santa didn't know that he would pay for his terrible faux pas.

"You're ours now, old man!" said Voldar. "From now on, you make toys for Mars!" What was Santa to do? Sure, Santa can make and deliver toys for all of the children of Earth, but Earth and Mars? That's just ridiculous!

Santa knew how to deal with unruly children. He sat Voldar down on his lap and they had a little talk.

At this point, the narrative broke off for a Left-Handed Drawing Contest - one of our favourite Christmas traditions.

Suddenly, the tables were turned when Santa got hold of the Martian's laser pistol. Now it would be Santa who would be telling you what to get him for Christmas!

The Martian got the appropriate comeuppance for her insolence. In the butt.

Then we had another contest. Squishable ducks were given as prizes, per the ancient Norse yuletide tradition. If you don't believe me, ask any ancient Norsemen.

It was then that Voldar had a change of heart and costume. She truly got out of her jumpsuit and into the Christmas spirit.

Santa approved of this new look and departed, knowing that the spirit of Martian Christmas was in good hands.

Torr seemed to approve, too.

And the audience.

And so we all got drunk.

And in a shocking twist ending, Foley and Melanie fell in love with Torr. Bet you didn't see that coming.

Greetings, Art Combatants!

Do you ever wish that your favourite video game characters were real people you could play with? What are you, 8? Seriously, you're lucky that this session just featured Stella Chuu dressed as Ivy Valentine (of the Soulcalibur franchise), because if Ivy were real and she knew what you wanted to do with her, she would kill you. Kate Black took photographs.

Speaking of Ms. Chuu, do you know who my favourite character from A Streetcar Named Desire is? "Elaine! ELAINE!" Oh, wait, that was The Graduate. Still, The Graduate sure was a great movie.

For those of you unfamiliar with the character, I should explain that Ivy is a British noblewoman who lost her soul in a fight with her father and has to use a prosthetic soul. That plot element really strains the prosthetic suspension of disbelief that I usually use.

In the backstage shots, we see that her white coiffure is not her natural hair. It is merely a wig that she wears over her natural wig cap.

Those spikes on her fingers are useful for when Ivy forgets she has a damn sword.

We had quite a turn-out to this session, representing those whose interests include the arts and beating the shit out of virtual people.

Here we see the audience unlocking the One-Line Drawing achievement.

Art from the session included some traditional media as well as the fancy computer-generated imaging that Soulcalibur is known for.

The Soulcalibur series originated in Japan, where it is customary to remove one's boots before doing a striptease.

It's a good thing she's wearing that coat. Otherwise, she might be cold.

For our second contest, we asked our audience to imagine some mundane activities from Ivy's everyday life, like laundry

Our winner was chosen based only on his rendition of Ivy getting her vacuum repaired, but when we saw his kickass Boston t-shirt, we knew we had given the Squishable to the right man.

Ivy and the Snake Sword sure have some fun together. Oh yeah, I should probably mention that the sword is alive and it has its own soul, because why not?

This yoga position is called "The Tortoise Who Is About to Cut You Up With Her Chain Whip."

For the Drinking Contest, we had the audience draw Ivy facing off against some other famous British characters. I think this one is Dr. Who.

It is a travesty that this one didn't win, an abso-bloody-lute travesty.

The denizens of the Hundred Acre Woods didn't really stand much of a chance.

Of COURSE this tasteful depiction of Prince Harry won.

The winners had their drinks and then Stella had hers.

Some of you may say that this is not a safe way to handle a sword, but I'm sure most of you don't care.

Apparently, Foley knew the BEST CHEAT CODE EVER!

I love how pleased Foley looks with his little stuffed alpaca.

Word up, 24 Hour Arty People!

This year, for slightly-before-Halloween, Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School ran a special midnight session at Unicorn Meat's Illumination Party with Delysia La Chatte and Ariel Wolfe. Thank you to Unicorn Meat for having us and Kate Black for taking pictures.

I should probably note that this was a costume party, so the audience came dressed in costume. In the front row, we see Black Canary, Woodstock, MC Hammer, and Johnny Cash.

This woman is dressed as some sort of feathered creature - I'm guessing a velociraptor.

The gentleman in green is dressed as Robin from Da Hood. I am so horrified that I may have correctly identified his costume.

As the night wore on, Delysia was seen drinking with the emaciated corpse of Sam Kinison.

This ladies costume is woven from dreams and rainbows and takes the appearance of the viewer's conception of the ideal woman.

And one of this year's most popular couples' costumes - Green Arrow and Lady Gaga.

Greeting Art Humans

Recently, our spaceship was commandeered by a killer robot from outer space - a sexy killer robot from outer space. That's right, it was time for our Battlestar Galactica session. Fortunately, our crew had been trained in the habits of robots by watching all six Star Wars movies and we knew all about their poorly constructed comic relief antics. Unfortunately, this robot did not fall apart even when hit really hard and seemed more interested in murder than slapstick comedy. So it was that we were overrun by Stormy Leather the cylon. However, it wasn't all bad, as it turns out that the cylons are much better written than any of the robots in our training. Kate Black took photos.

The costume she arrived in certainly left a lot to the imagination. I guess it was designed more for combat than for sexual arousal. Of course, for a plastic fetishist like me, this is paradise. For everyone else, hang in there:

But we'll get to that later.

While I was writing this, looking at these pictures, "Don't Cha" by the Pussycat Dolls was playing and it was oddly hilarious. Seriously try putting it on. Right?

I'm telling you, in a couple of years, everyone will be wearing this.

I had a joke about "hand" guns that no longer seems appropriate.

I bet her ass looks great under that.

Kate Black would like to remind everyone that the lighting in the bar is not her fault.

Our crew admirably kept brave, even cheerful, faces while they were under assault.

I bet cylons are really popular at raves.

Here's a contest winner with a Squishable, so a contest must have happened, right?

Robot corsets are like regular corsets, but from the future.

Unfortunately, she never got more naked than this.

I'm pretty sure the shoes are also robotic.

I think she was determined to use as many colours as she could.

At this point, her mechanic had to make adjustments in the middle of the session. How embarrassing!

Our final contest was to come up with a better ending than that godawful series finale. This artist's surprise twist was that Stormy was a man the whole time. At this point, that really would be extremely surprising.

Hello, Sketchniks.

There is nothing cooler or edgier than modern reinterpretations of classic fairy tales. Everyone is doing it and we wanted in. Looking through an old book of Grimms' Fairy Tales, we found the classic story of Snow White was greatly in need of updating. Sure, it's been passed down for generations, but it's missing one very key component: breasts. There is no mention in the entire story of breasts or fancy underwear. I know, every girl dreams of growing up to meet a handsome prince and living happily ever after with him, and about 10% dream that prince has a vagina, but breasts are just about the best part of growing up. Who the hell dreams of growing up and not having breasts? It's stupid and I don't believe it for a moment. So, we got Miss Vivian to provide the breasts and fancy underwear for our modern retelling of Snow White that cuts out all of the unimportant parts about mining and housework. Lauren Goldberg took pictures.

For verisimilitude, we actually poisoned this apple. Forgetting about that, I accidentally ate the apple and had to be rushed to a hospital, where a team of surgeons who were able to revive me by kissing me with true love in their hearts.

Yao drew the most awesome poster for this event, that later had to be erased for a calculus lesson.

In addition to the traditional poisoned comb and talking mirror, our version of the story also included a time machine, which the 18th century Bavarian princess only used for buying shoes.

Our venue for this session included a number of ladders, which allowed us to capture aerial views of the audience, which are way more artistic than gound shots.

Our Blind Drawing Contest allowed our artists to explore modes of expression not often seen in traditional life drawing.

Snow White's clothes came off for the traditional Bavarian striptease, which is integral to all of their most popular Fairy Tales as it keeps parents from falling asleep in the middle of the story.

Everyone remembers the original names for the dwarves - Flick, Glick, Snick, Dick Blick, Plick, Whick, and Quee. However, since that isn't true and people really only remember the Disney version, we asked our audience to suggest their own dwarves based on adjectives.

"Slutty"

"Jewy"

The contest winner received a stuffed animal from Squishable, named "Adorable."

This part of the story, where Snow White pierced herself with peacock feathers was a bit of a departure from the original story, but it symbolizes how fucking awesome Miss Vivian is.

Our audience was clearly inspired.

In the end, Snow White stands alone, because she doesn't need a prince to validate her existence.

And in a stunning, unexpected twist, people drew her.

And they lived happily ever after.

Adieu, Art Monkeys.

Recently, Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School had its last session at the Bowery Poetry Club. At the same time we were leaving our home, Raquel Reed was leaving hers. While Dr. Sketchy was merely moving a few blocks downtown, Raquel was moving clear across the country, to the rancid, decaying hellhole of Los Angeles. Naturally, we had to have one last session with Raquel, and, as any jilted lover, we had to express how much we hated California and their stupid everything. Kate Black took pictures.

This outfit was deemed "not fancy enough" by the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, and Raquel had to change it midway through the session.

Raquel removed her glove and used her ungloved hand to vote for Governor Jerry Brown, knowing that I could no longer crack wise about her governor if Arnold Schwarzenegger was not in office. Well you know what, Jerry Brown? You're bald!

There's a football team in California called the Raiders, but do you know what they should be called? The Gay-ders! Not just to show solidarity with the thriving Bay area homosexual community, but because then it would sound like "Gators," which is a good name for a sports team. Go Gay-ders!

Backstage, we have some shots of Raquel getting dressed. Whenever I see women do that, I just think it's such a wasted effort.

I have been told that the safest place to be during an earthquake is in a doorframe. I say the safest place to be is the east coast.

Raquel sits on a leopard-print chair, contemplating her next move. Also, the Beach Boys suck.

Frankly, I have forgotten what our first contest was. These photos aren't exactly helping.

Raquel looks behind herself apprehensively. If I learned anything from Ice Cube lyrics, you better learn to watch your back if you're going to live in L.A.

Finally, Raquel was through fucking around and put on the least clothing she had.

These are just some of the unfortunates rendered homeless by the Bowery Poetry Club's closure. We hope to have Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School up and running again before they must resort to doing something useful with their time.

Here, we see a small sampling of the fantastic art that our artists produced. I am crediting the good quality of their artwork to them living somewhere decent, unlike certain shitty states I could name.

Take one last look, New York, at what the West is taking from us.

Here we are judging our final contest at the Bowery Poetry Club. It was as dramatic and epic as this picture makes it seem.

And now that it's over and I'm more level headed, I forgive California. I know that it only means well in the depths of its limousine liberal heart. It only made those Transformers movies because it was confused. Take good care of Raquel, you wacky state, you.
