Your one and only Dr. Sketchy experience at the Jersey Shore!
Join us on the 3rd Wednesday of the month to sketch a variety of models dressed to a theme. Bring your pens, pencils, sketchbooks, and anything else you like to make art with! Capitoline provides delicious food (we mean it!) and keeps the beverages flowing for you at their basement bar.
Our events are open to patrons 18+. Admission is $10 at the door or in advance for a seat (sketchers and non-sketchers alike) and these are sketch-only events. Cell phone photos are allowed for reference, but please, no photographers.
Dressing for the theme is always encouraged! We host our events in three 45-minute rounds of sketching, with breaks in between. During our breaks, our models select their favorite artwork from the previous round. We award a prize to the talented artist winner and take a photo of them and the model. At the end, we all take a “family portrait” with our artists, models, and Team Sketchy. Photos are published here, as well as on our Facebook page.
Occasionally we have models who also are performers- singers, burlesquers, musicians- so you may be in for a treat with special performances!
We encourage attendees to share their photos and artwork from the event on social media with the hashtag #drsketchyasburypark
Dr. Sketchy Asbury Park’s Origin:
The Dr. Sketchy’s Asbury Park branch was established in 2011 by friends and artists Tim and Stephanie, after attending a Dr. Sketchy event in NYC. Booze + art + subculture? Brilliant. They were hooked! Immediately after leaving, the plans began for starting their own venture closer to home on the Jersey Shore. They made the iconic Asbury Lanes their home, and held some of the most artistic, eclectic, and entertaining events in town! A bowling alley where tattoos and piercings were more common than bowling pins, local art lined the walls, and everyone from Rockabillies to Pinups, Hipsters to Punkers hung out- it was more than perfect for hosting these monthly events!
Different from most branches, their events featured many models of all different backgrounds, body types, and skill sets, and their themes ranged from Pop Culture to Crazy Cat Ladies (for the Calling All Cats charity!). Stephanie brought Dr. Sketchy to the Belmar Arts Council, and reached even more sketching enthusiasts. Artists and philanthropists, Tim and Stephanie poured their souls into their project, and models, photographers, artists, and dabblers flocked to the Jersey Shore to attend their amazing events! Art poured forth from Dr. Sketchy’s Asbury Park, and a tribe was born.
Unfortunately, in 2015 the old Asbury Lanes announced they were closing their doors for good. This news shocked and saddened our community, and we miss them to this day. Stephanie retired from the Belmar Arts Council and moved out of state. Dr. Sketchy’s Asbury Park was forced to find a new home. After trying many locations, Tim was able to relocate to the Bond Street Complex’s Capitoline Basement, where we remain today.
In September of 2017, The Mighty Stopwatch was handed over from our founder Tim, to a new generation of Dr. Sketchy administrators. Team Sketchy, as we call ourselves, currently consists of long-time Dr. Sketchy attendees CJ, Tracy, and Celia. Working together, we share the delight of planning and bringing our monthly events to the Capitoline Basement, and upholding the integrity and atmosphere our tribe has come to expect. It is an honor and a privilege to keep bringing Dr. Sketchy events to Asbury Park!!
